The Meaning of the Four Faces of the Living Creatures Described in the Book of Ezekiel and the Book of Revelation

10 As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face of a man, each of the  four had the face of a lion on the right side, each of the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and each of the four had the face of an eagle.  Ezekiel 1:10

These four faces described here and elsewhere in the book of Ezekiel and the book of Revelation, have wonderful meanings.  To be fair to this teaching, to prove these meanings are correct will take a half of a book and more.  The actual meanings are clear, simple and loaded with common sense.

It turns out that these four faces of these living creatures are associated with the four fundamental symbols associated with the Ark of the Covenant.  The Ark of the Covenant contained three symbols inside and also had a pair of golden cherubim of glory  (Hebrews 9:5) which were imbedded into the top of the ark (Mercy Seat)  and were one piece with the Mercy Seat (Exodus 25: 19-21).  The three articles inside the Ark of the Covenant “were the golden pot that had the manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant, …” (Hebrews 9:4)

The presence of God appeared above the ark and between the cherubim.  When God’s presence left the temple in the book of Ezekiel, the four living creatures with the four faces accompanied God.  The four faces of the living creatures matched up with the four fundamental symbols associated with the ark.

Also, when Jesus taught us to pray (Mathew 6:9-11), the first four point of the Lord’s Prayer matched up with both the four faces of the living creatures and the four symbols associated with the Ark of the Covenant.

Also hundreds and even thousands of scriptures in the Old Testament and the New Testament declare from one to four of the faces of these living creatures. And things keep developing from there.  Sinful human beings have four fundamentals to their lives that parallel these four faces, because they were made in God’s image.
